Up until 1998, the Prairie Labyrinth was laid out in this pattern.
Nischa Roman is an artist, dowser, and healer who has worked with labyrinths for many years.
In meditation she received the guidance to rearrange the color pattern we were accustomed to following
by placing them in the order that the chakras run through our bodies. Her intuitive reasoning was that this was more conducive to healing.
Instead of beginning with Yellow, entering at the Solar Plexus, we would be starting with Red, at the Root Chakra.
And, instead of looking at an overall rainbow design, we would be following the rainbow in its' sequential order. The energy would be flowing from the Root to the Crown chakra and back again returning us to a "grounded" state.
Although reluctant to change from the original rainbow pattern, dowsing confirmed that this was the right energy for the Prairie Labyrinth and the inner work that occurs here.
At each turning point within the Prairie Labyrinth, a fence post is sunk in the ground to inform the walker of the correlation between the path they are on and the chakra that aligns with it. This is achieved by using color, sound and art. Sound comes from individual windchimes that take you through the C Major scale.
Clay Chakra Angels were created by Toby Evans in corresponding colors to guide you through each turn providing a self-reflective station for RELEASE on the Walk Into the labyrinth and RENEWAL on the Walk Out of the labyrinth.
The angels became the inspiration for developing the "Chakra Labyrinth Cards".
The card deck mimicks the RELEASE and RENEW process that was being practiced in the Prairie Labyirnth. Examples of the Chakra Labyrinth Cards are featured on Toby's Blog at
The angels can be purchased individually or as a set of seven. They are cast duplicates in a gypsum-based polymer, handpainted in acrylic and sealed in resin. For inquiries E-mail Toby.

Beginning of the Prairie Labyrinth.
The butterfly is painted on the beginning post as a symbol of transformation.
Behind it is the "labrys" or the sacred double-headed axe of the Goddess. This has significance to the ancient Minoans. At the temple at Knossos on Crete, labyrs were found carved on walls throughout the labyrinthine stone corridors. This structure became known as the labyrinth, the dwelling of the labyrs. One interpretation of the labrys symbol is that of the butterfly. Its symmetry reminds us of balance. The labyrinth provides a safe container to address and adjust the parts of our life that are out of balance.
Walking through the labyrinth is akin to walking through your own energy body. At each post you may stop and reflect asking,
"What do I most need to release from my Root Chakra... Sacral... Solar Plexus... etc.? " and "What am I ready to renew?"
Listen to your own inner responses as you scroll down through each image.

The Goal area or center of the Prairie labyrinth.
A 6-pointed copper star is mounted above the center post. It symbolizes bringing together the Earth and the Sky or the Divine Feminine and Masculine energies that are present in each of us. In 3-dimensional form this would be called a star tetrahedron or the Mer-Ka-Ba (our human light body).

There are four benches within the goal area.
Coming to rest within the labyrinth is a good reminder to be still and return to the center of yourself. Here you can open to receive what you most need.
