Welcome to the Prairie Labyrinth Gallery

The Prairie Labyrinthis a left-handed, seven-circuit Classical labyrinth oriented with the mouth facing South. Some of the aerial shots were taken in spring with "green-up" occurring on the cut paths standing out in contrast to the rest of the dead winter grasses.

Others were taken in fall when the grasses (Big Blue Stem, Indian and Switch grass) reach their peak height (5-8 ft.) The mowed path defines the pattern due to the difference in height.

The "wall" area defining the path in most labyrinths is relatively low ( rocks, burmed soil, a painted line, brick pavers, etc.) which allows you to see the entire pattern as you walk. In the Prairie Labyrinth the "wall" is created from four foot wide sections of grass. This makes it a living labyrinth. The entire pattern changes in subtle ways on a daily basis and in dramatic ways due to weather and changes of the seasons. Nature, as your constant walking companion, reflects your inner journey back to you through your senses, stirring your thoughts and emotions.

Part of maintaining a prairie means burning the grasses every 2- 3 years to clear out the old accumulated grasses and weeds. This is done in the spring. It also acts as a catalyst to jump start the new seeds growth.

There has been seven burns over the last fourteen years. Each one is powerful and unique

A controlled ring-head burn is planned with two ignition and containment teams moving in opposite directions around the circumference of the land. The fire is directed to burn toward the center allowing the labyrinth to be the last area to burn.

When the burn is over the labyrinth path is fully revealed.
This is the only time you can see the entire unicursal design with all the paths exposed

A few days later the new growth explodes and another season begins.
